Whitman Move-In 2026: A Family's Guide to Drop-Off Week

If you have a first-year headed to Whitman, the calendar just got real: residence halls open on Wednesday, August 26, and orientation runs straight through to the start of classes on Tuesday, September 1. That's under four weeks away.

Drop-off is one of those trips where a little logistics work buys back a lot of the day. Here's what the college's schedule looks like, and how we'd plan the stay around it.

International students arrive Saturday, August 22, with international orientation running August 23–25. Move-in day for everyone else is Wednesday, August 26, and New Student Orientation runs August 26–31. Family Orientation — the programming built specifically for parents and families — is Thursday, August 27. Classes begin Tuesday, September 1.

Looking further out, Whitman's Family Weekend this fall is October 23–25. If you already know you're coming back for it, book that stay at the same time you book this one.

Whitman posts the full schedule, the Student Welcome Guide, and a Family Welcome Guide on its new-student orientation pages, and Dean Juli Dunn sends Monday emails to incoming students through the summer with the details as they firm up. Check those for exact times before you finalize travel — the dates above are the college's published Fall 2026 schedule, but individual event times shift.

Walla Walla is four to four and a half hours from Seattle or Portland, and further from almost anywhere else. Driving in on the morning of the 26th means arriving frazzled, in line, in August heat, with a car that needs unloading immediately.

Book Tuesday the 25th instead. Come in the afternoon, unload the car into the house, have a real dinner, and let your student sleep somewhere quiet before the biggest day of their year. In the morning you're ten minutes from campus with a car that's already sorted.

If you're flying, Walla Walla Regional Airport connects daily through Seattle and sits a few minutes from town — though most families end up driving because of everything that has to come with them.

The morning is boxes, stairs, and a first handshake with the roommate. It goes faster than you expect. What surprises most parents is the back half of the day: orientation starts the same afternoon, and your student gets absorbed into it quickly — meetings, small groups, and a schedule that isn't yours.

That's normal, and it's the point. Plan for the possibility that you'll have an unexpectedly free afternoon and nowhere in particular to be.

Family Orientation is Thursday the 27th, the day after move-in. Families who book a single night around the 26th end up either driving home before the programming or scrambling for a second night at the last minute, when nothing good is left.

Plan on three nights — in the 25th, move in the 26th, family programming the 27th — and head home Friday. If you can stretch to Saturday the 29th, you'll catch the downtown farmers market, which runs Saturday mornings through October and is a good last stop before the drive.

Drop-off is exactly the trip a vacation home is built for. A full kitchen means the last family breakfast happens around a table instead of in a lobby. Laundry means the sheets and towels that got rained on in transit are usable. A garage or spare room means the things that don't fit in a dorm room have somewhere to live for a day while you figure it out.

There's also the quiet. After a day of hauling boxes and meeting strangers, having a living room where the family can decompress — and where your student can come back for dinner if there's a gap in the schedule — is worth more than the square footage suggests.

Our downtown homes are walking distance from Whitman's campus, which makes the trips back and forth easy. Larger houses a few minutes out work better when grandparents or siblings are along.

Don't drive straight home. The hours right after goodbye are the hard ones, and Walla Walla is a good place to spend them.

Walk Main Street and taste at a downtown tasting room or two — dozens of wineries pour within a few blocks, most without an appointment. Do the loop at Bennington Lake, ten minutes from downtown and flat the whole way. Wander Pioneer Park on the east side of town. Have a long dinner at one of the farm-to-table places downtown.
